Visitors to this year’s Godiva Festival will have the chance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 2-Tone, with pioneering group The Selecter performing Sunday on the Main Stage.

There will also be a variety of acts inspired by the genre for fans to see.

Created in Coventry in the late 1970s, 2-Tone is a musical genre that combines elements of ska, punk-rock and new wave. The style was pioneered by Coventry bands, The Selecter and The Specials.

To celebrate this anniversary, on Saturday there are several acts inspired by 2-Tone, or acted as inspiration behind the movement, performing in the Rhythm Tent. From current Coventry based 2-Tone acts like Ruder than U, reggae artists like Tippa Irie and Barbdwire, to bands like Rooted N Booted who combine 2-Tone with drum ‘n’ bass, the Rhythm Tent is a must for any 2-Tone fan. To round off the celebration, one of the most influential 2-Tone bands, The Selecter will be performing Sunday on the Main Stage.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Events said: “We’re incredibly proud to be celebrating Coventry’s rich music history this year at Godiva Festival. 2-Tone was born in Coventry, so it’s fantastic that we’re able to celebrate its 40th anniversary by having The Selecter perform Sunday on the main stage.

“We recommend people get their tickets in advance, so they can beat the queues and guarantee entry. Godiva Festival 2019 is going to be a truly special event.”

Pauline Black, Lead vocalist of The Selecter, said: "The Selecter has championed multiculturalism & the 2-tone label with their unique style and music to an international audience for 40 years. We are immensely proud to be continuing that tradition in our hometown of Coventry, the birthplace of 2-tone, at Godiva Festival 2019, this coming weekend".

Pete Chambers, Curator of the Coventry Music Museum, said: "There is nothing more Coventry than the Godiva Festival and 2-Tone music. So little wonder then why we are all getting more than a little excited with the 40 Years of 2-Tone line up that is punctuating this Godiva weekend. It's our music our festival...so let the skanking begin".

Godiva Festival 2019 will take place from Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July in the City’s War Memorial Park.
