Godiva Festival’s battle of the bands-style competition is back and offering local musicians the chance to perform on one of Godiva Festival’s stages.

Godiva Calling is back for 2019 and bands or solo artists with a Coventry postcode are eligible to apply.

The heats are divided into six categories, Indie Rock, Urban, Alternative, Heavy Rock/Metal, Singer/Songwriter/Acoustic and Under 18s.

Winners from each category will be awarded a slot to perform on one of the Godiva Festival’s stages.

Previous winners, The Upsiders, who won the Alternative category of last year’s Godiva Calling competition, and performed on Saturday’s Main Stage, said: “There are few things more validating in life than performing your music to an excitable, sun-soaked audience. Godiva Festival gave us a stage to go for it, braces and all! Godiva Calling gave us that chance and we loved every second!”

Andy Williams, Director of Business, Investment and Culture at Coventry City Council, said: “We’re very proud of the fact that we’re able to offer local artists and musicians the chance to perform at Godiva Festival. We had over 70 local artists performing across all our stages last year, and it just goes to show the amount of talent we have and want to celebrate here in Coventry and Warwickshire.”

“It’s also great that we have the support of some excellent local music venues who offer their own support by organising and hosting the heats and finals. We’re looking forward to seeing what 2019’s Godiva Calling brings and we anticipate many local artists will take part in this ever-popular competition.”

Heats for the competition will take place at five venues across the city in May; the New Albany Pub, Millsy’s, the West Indian Centre, The Tin Music & Arts and The Arches.

Anyone who is interested in taking part can register to take part in the heats.

The Godiva Festival 2019 will take place over the weekend of 5-7 July in the city’s War Memorial Park.
