Councillor Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member responsible for Events, expressed his support for Coventry Godiva Festival at a meeting of the Full Council.
Commenting on the resounding success of this year’s event which attracted a record 148,000 visits to the park, Councillor Khan thanked the public, supporters, sponsors and Council staff for making the event a success, particularly with the public launch of the city’s bid for UK City of Culture also taking place on the Sunday of this year’s festival. Councillor Khan commented:
“Having attended the Coventry Godiva Festival across the weekend this year, I am pleased to offer my congratulations and thanks to Council staff, our key partners, sponsors and supporters for a fantastic event.
“I would also particularly like to thank the people of Coventry for turning out to support the event in such numbers, and for creating such a friendly, welcoming, celebratory atmosphere that was a pleasure to experience.
“The Coventry Godiva Festival showcases and celebrates much that is great in this city – our people, our talent, our creativity and our community. The event has grown in each of the past three years, successively breaking attendance records, showcasing the city’s remarkable and diverse talents, enhancing the city’s reputation for staging great events, and providing a significant economic benefit to the local economy. For these reasons, Coventry should be proud of the festival.
“With the above in mind, I am today asking officers to bring forward a report to Cabinet, as a matter of priority, making recommendations on the necessary steps to secure the future of the festival. I believe it is a priority for us to provide certainty over the future of this popular, successful family event, which for many people has become their favourite weekend in the city’s cultural life.”
The Council is also making it clear that the on-going support of partners, organisers and sponsors, is essential to maintain and develop the festival for future years.
